Chiriqui Region

Cloud forests, coffee highlands and Pacific island escapes

The province of Chiriquí, in western Panama near the Costa Rican border, packs an unusual range of landscapes into a compact area. The highlands around Boquete and Cerro Punta sit above 1,500 meters in cloud forest, while the Gulf of Chiriquí opens onto a largely undeveloped Pacific archipelago. Lonely Planet named Chiriquí one of the world's top regions in its Best in Travel 2025. Boquete has become the epicenter of Panama's specialty coffee scene, producing the Geisha variety that regularly fetches record prices at international auctions. Higher up, Cerro Punta and the Quetzal Trail lead through mossy forests where the resplendent quetzal nests between January and May. On the coast, Coiba National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage site — protects one of the largest Pacific coral reefs in the Americas, with manta rays, whale sharks, and humpback whales passing through its waters seasonally. From pre-dawn summit hikes on Volcán Barú to quiet afternoons on deserted gulf islands, Chiriquí covers more ground than most travelers expect from a single province.

  • Cloud forests and the resplendent quetzal — La Amistad International Park and the Quetzal Trail, with peak sighting season from January to May.
  • Cerro Punta and the highlands — Panama's highest inhabited area at 1,800 meters, with flower farms, strawberry fields, and a cool mountain climate.

Don't miss these experiences in Chiriqui

Sunrise hike on Volcán Barú

The climb starts around midnight from the Boquete side. You hike in darkness through cloud forest, the temperature dropping steadily, until you reach the summit at 3,475 meters just before dawn. On a clear morning, both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea are visible simultaneously — a view available from very few points on the planet. The descent through daylight reveals the landscape you crossed blind: ferns, mossy trees, and volcanic rock. It is physically demanding and requires warm layers, but the reward is difficult to match anywhere else in Panama.

Coffee tour

Visiting a Geisha coffee plantation in the hills above Boquete goes well beyond a standard tasting session. You walk through the rows of coffee plants at altitude, learn how volcanic soil, shade cover, and microclimate produce a bean that has sold for over $2,000 per kilogram at auction, and follow the process from cherry to roasted cup. Several farms — including Finca Lérida and Hacienda La Esmeralda — combine the tour with birdwatching, since the same cloud forest conditions that suit the coffee also attract quetzals and hundreds of other species.
