Pacific Coast of Panama <7b> & Azuero Peninsula

Surf breaks, sea turtles and the heartland of Panamanian folklore

The Pacific coast runs from the beaches near Panama City all the way down to the Azuero Peninsula, the cultural core of the country. This side of Panama combines long sandy beaches, reliable surf, and access to marine wildlife with a living folk tradition that has shaped the national identity. The Azuero Peninsula, known as the "Corazón de Panamá," is where the pollera — Panama's national costume, recognized by UNESCO — is still embroidered by hand over months or even years. The Carnival of Las Tablas and the Fiesta de la Mejorana in Guararé are not performances staged for visitors; they are the real thing, rooted in centuries of local tradition. Further west along the coast, the fishing village of Santa Catalina draws surfers to some of the country's strongest wave breaks and serves as the main departure point for Coiba National Park. Down south, the beaches around Pedasí remain quiet and largely undeveloped, with sea turtles nesting on Isla Cañas by the thousands between July and January. Inland, El Valle de Antón — a small town set inside an extinct volcanic crater — provides a cooler escape just two hours from the capital, with waterfalls, hiking trails, and a popular weekend artisan market.

Unique travel experiences to do on the Pacific Coast of Panamaa

Night turtle nesting on Isla Cañas

Between July and January, thousands of olive ridley sea turtles come ashore on Isla Cañas to lay their eggs — sometimes hundreds in a single night during mass nesting events called "arribadas." You reach the island by boat from the village of Cañas, then walk the beach after dark with a local guide who knows where the turtles are arriving. The experience is raw and unpolished: no boardwalks, no lighting, just sand and the sound of the ocean. Isla Cañas is one of the few places in Panama where this phenomenon can be observed with minimal infrastructure and direct community involvement.

Carnival in Las Tablas

The four days leading up to Ash Wednesday turn the small town of Las Tablas into the most intense street celebration in Central America. Two rival queens — Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo — compete through elaborate floats, fireworks, traditional pollera costumes, and murga bands that play through the night. The rivalry dates back to 1906 and locals take it seriously. This is not a tourist event with reserved seating; you are in the crowd, covered in foam and paint, surrounded by families who have been preparing their queen's float for months.
